Breath is the tool, let us be your guide
“Modern life, with all its stresses, has conspired to shorten our breaths... We rush through life and our breathing rushes along with us.”
–George Mumford, Mindfulness Meditation Coach extraordinaire
On average, we take between 17,000 and 23,000 breaths a day – usually without being aware of a single one of them. Really, there is nothing more fundamental than the breath. To recognize this, we need look no further than to the people in our lives suffering from ailments such as asthma, COPD or restrictive lung disease.
During times of stress, however, even those of us with healthy lung function are prone to breath restriction. In a world in which our "always on" day to day is pushing our sympathetic nervous system (connected to the “fight or flight” response) into overdrive, most of us – whether we realize it or not – need far greater counter-balancing through activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. The breath is the gateway. Breathing with awareness and intent is the antidote.
BreatheFreeNow.org was founded by Mani Srinivasan, an avid yoga and meditation practitioner, whose mother suffered from pulmonary fibrosis. Our mission is to inspire, educate and deliver breathing techniques that improve people's daily lives. We serve a broad audience across a diverse set of communities.
In our workshops we explore fundamental breathing techniques with an emphasis on linking breath to simple movements in the body, thereby discovering our individual breathing patterns and how to improve upon them. Participants learn key concepts about the anatomy of breathing, deepen awareness of their breath, and learn simple, but powerful exercises that they can continue practicing on their own. The workshops are accessible and adaptable for all experience levels.
